Solstice Highlighter Palette from Sleek Makeup

Okay. So I’m doing another blog post on a product from Sleek Makeup again. I did one on their Matte Me liquid lipsticks yesterday (click), and today, I’m doing one on their Solstice Highlighter Palette.

This palette comes with 3 powder highlighters (Hemisphere, Subsolar, and Equinox), and 1 cream highlighter (Ecliptic) housed in a shiny gold case with a decently sized mirror and a tiny little highlighter brush. Just like their liquid lipsticks, the price point of this palette isn’t bad. It’s actually pretty cheap, considering that it’s not a local, Philippine-made brand.

In the pan, these highlighters already look gorgeous. Just by eyeballing them, you can already tell that these babies will give such a fierce highlight to your face.

Swatched lightly on the back of my hand, this is what they look like:

Hemisphere has a pinky-purple sheen to it, while Equinox is a much more golden highlight similar to Becca’s Prosecco Pop, but a little more metallic. Subsolar is a silvery highlight. Ecliptic is the more subdued highlight among all four, being a bronzy pink.

I’d say that this palette gives you a variety of highlights you can use for different occasions. I’d wear Hemisphere on a night out. Subsolar you can even use as an inner corner highlight for your eyes. I’d say Equinox and Ecliptic are the more wearable, everyday highlights in this palette. All of them, though, look fantastic, and are all buildable to achieve the look and the pop you want.

Verdict: 10/10 for the price point, variety, and versatility

Sleek Matte Me liquid lipsticks

Last weekend, I went on a bit of a shopping spree at the Sleek Makeup counter over at Landmark Makati. I picked up a couple of items from them, but since then, I have only gotten to road test these Matte Me Ultra Smooth Matte Lip Creams.

I bought two shades from the line: Bittersweet, and Birthday Suit.

Both shades are very wearable, everyday shades; Bittersweet being a coral pink, and Birthday Suit being a pinky mauve.

The formula of these lipsticks is a bit watery, but thick enough to easily spread and be applied on the lips. It takes a few minutes for them to completely dry on the lips, but even when they do, there is still quite a tacky feel left. This is barely noticeable, though. The thing I love most about this formula is that it is very lightweight and non-drying. It kept my lips feeling moisturized throughout the day, and didn’t crack my lips up at all. There was, however, a little bit of transfer I noticed when I was eating, and the color seemed to wear off a little over time, so I did have to retouch during the afternoon. Reapplying the lipstick was easy, it did not go on patchy or wipe off the lipstick underneath.

Verdict for these matte lipsticks: 7/10

Inspite of the fact that these lipsticks fade out throughout the day, and do transfer minimally, I will still definitely use these lipsticks again, and will probably purchase a couple more shades for myself in the future.

Summer nails feat. Orly and KL Polish

Just like any other girl, I enjoy getting pampered. Every two to three weeks, I make sure my nails are well taken care of: cut, filed, cleaned, buffed, and polished.

In the past, I would just choose from the polish selection brought by my trusty nail technician. But recently, I began a love affair with nail polish. I started buying my own bottles in colors that I truly loved.

This week, I chose to use two colors which I felt were appropriate for the Philippines’ currently sweltering summer heat.

I had my favorite nail tech apply Orly‘s Spark on my toes, and KL Polish‘s Caramello on my hands. Spark is a bright yellow, while Caramello is an orangey mustard shade.

Caramello by KL Polish is just a beautiful shade. I love how it is both loud and neutral at the same time. It’s a color that’s just begging for attention! So pretty.

KL Polish is a relatively new brand created by one of my favorite youtubers, Kathleen Lights. This brand of polishes isn’t readily available in the Philippine market, though. Since the company itself doesn’t yet ship to the Philippines, I had to order mine from impressnails on Shopee.  I also bought three other shades from this collection (Broccoli and Chocolate, Snickerdoodle, and Das Esspensive), and they are just as beautiful as this one. Kathleen released her new spring nail polish line last night in Manila time, so I’m gonna go and get myself some, if not all, of that! 😉

Spark by Orly is such a bright and happy shade. It just screams summer. I love how it just makes my toes look like they’re ready to sink into the sand and take a dip in the sea anytime now.

Unlike KL PolishOrly nail polishes are easier to find here. I buy my bottles from Landmark Makati. They have a pretty good selection of polishes there, and it’s hard to buy just one! I always end up with a couple of bottles in my shopping bag.

Any favorite polishes of your own? 🙂

NYX mini haul

I spent a good chunk of last Sunday at Uptown Mall in BGC looking to buy new makeup. I initially wanted to check out the newly opened Jcat Beauty store there (haul in a future blog post 😉 ), but came across the little NYX stall on the same floor. The stall was located right outside the Jcat Beauty store, and was composed of just 3-4 shelves of makeup. The ladies at the counter told me that the company was testing out the waters of Manila first, trying to see if the brand would click here, prior to putting up a flagship store.

I bought three items from them: 2 lipsticks, and 1 eyeliner. I ended up paying only PhP 880.00 for all three items, which is pretty cheap considering that this is not a local brand.

I got myself one matte lipstick in the shade MLS35 Honeymoon, and another lipstick in a satin finish in shade LSS565 B52. Both shades are basically in the same color family, the mauvey pinks. Here they are swatched on my hand:

I wore the LSS565 B52 the other day, and although it did transfer (as expected), it still left a stain on my lips, so much so that I didn’t need to touch it up as frequently as I thought I would. Application was also very easy. One swipe did the trick.

The MLS35 Honeymoon shade I did try one morning, but I thought it made me look a little washed out. I will have to try it out with other makeup looks. The formula is good, though. One swipe is all I needed to get the intensity I wanted, and the lipstick itself did not feel very drying.

I also got myself a colored eyeliner in a teal green shade. The lady at the counter told me that the product was waterproof, but I had my doubts. Here it is swatched on my hand:

I love how refreshing the color is, especially for summer. I think this will go well with certain looks from my Morphe x Kathleenlights eyeshadow palette. Only drawback is that this definitely is not waterproof and not smudge proof. After swatching it on my hand, I tried to rub it with my finger, and the color smudged like there was no tomorrow. I don’t think this will last for long on my waterline. 😦

All in all, I am quite happy with my little haul, especially with the lipsticks. I’m excited to try out more stuff from NYX, probably in the next couple of weeks!

Monochromatic makeup

We’ve seen makeup trends come and go over the years, but I really love this one and I really hope that it is here to stay.

I’m not a very creative girl, and I’m not one to experiment with all those different color combinations. So when I heard about monochromatic makeup, I was sooo happy.

Monochromatic makeup simply means doing your entire face in colors having the same undertone, or about one to two shades lighter or darker.

I’ve been doing this everyday for the past week or so, and I love that it looks very put together.

I’ve been doing monochromatic makeup to achieve a very natural look in brown tones. Here are the products I’ve been using:

  1. Makeup For Ever Ultra HD Liquid Foundation (I’m in the shade Y365)

2. Benefit Hoola Bronzer to contour the face

My favorite contour powder. Probably also because it’s the only one I know how to use. Haha. Any suggestions?

3. NYX Wonder Stick in Universal to contour the nose

4. Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette using the following colors: Golden Ochre, Burnt Orange, Raw Sienna, Tempera, and Primavera.

I love this palette to death!!! There are so many looks you can do with it, each of them so perfectly gorgeous.

5. MAC Liptensity Lipstick in Smoked Almond

This lipstick looks pinky when swatched on my hand, but appears more brown when on my lips.

6. Benefit Dallas or Becca Amaretto blush on my cheeksScreen Shot 2017-04-11 at 6.17.24 PM.png

Dallas blush

Amaretto blush

Both blushes give my cheeks a very natural pinky-brown flush, which I just LOVE.

What colors have you been using to create your own monochromatic makeup look?

Makeup favorites

I love makeup (trying it, buying it, putting it on!), but I only really got the chance to actually learn how to do it properly early this year. By learning, I mean going on youtube and following all the tutorials by Jaclyn Hill and Kathleen Lights. 😉

Putting on good makeup takes a lot of practice and a lot of great products. Here are some of my favorites:

  1. Makeup For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation
    • When applied, this liquid foundation gives a flawless finish, and actually looks like skin! Coverage is medium, but is buildable to full. Best used with their Step 1 Primers.
  2. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer
    • I mentioned this product in one of my previous posts. It really is my go-to concealer because it does a great job of hiding the nasty dark circles under my eyes, AND brightening them too! This is also great for everyday, when you just can’t be bothered to put on foundation. I just slap this on under my eyes, on my forehead, on my chin, and just blend blend blend with a sponge.
  3. Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder
    • This finely-milled loose face powder is perfect for setting the under-eye area and the rest of the face without giving off a white cast. Great for baking the face too!
  4. Anastasia Brow Definer
    • I love the triangular configuration of this brow pencil! The wider flat side gives me the ability to shade in the more lateral sides of my brows, while the more pointed end allows me to create wispy, hair-like strokes where I need them.
  5. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
    • This keeps my eyeshadow in the place the entire day, and prevents the pigments from building up in those little lines.
  6. Anastasia Modern Renaissance Palette
    • I am obsessed with this eyeshadow palette! It has a great selection of extremely blendable warm shades and cool tones. It’s perfect for creating everyday eye looks, and also for creating darker, more glamorous looks for night and big occasions. Pigmentation of each individual eyeshadow is intense, so you only really need a light swipe for great color pay-off.
  7. Makeup For Ever Aqua Smoky Extravagant Mascara
    • I wasn’t a big fan of mascara before because every other product I tried was smudgy and clumpy and difficult to apply. But then I discovered this. I just love the cone-shaped wand on this, which makes it easy to reach those tiny lashes in the corners of my eyes. It does not clump or smudge, and stays on all day.
  8. Benefit Cheekathon “Kick Up Your Cheeks” Blush Kit
    • This set comes with 5 full-sized box o’ powders: Dandelion, Hoola (my go-to product for easy bronzing/contouring), Rockateur, Dallas (my favorite blush ever! It gives me a very natural flush of color), and Coralista. I love bringing this along whenever I travel or go out of town because of the variety. Only drawback would have to be the size of the palette itself; it is pretty big for traveling.
  9. NYX Wonder Stick
    • I bought mine in the shade Universal. The product itself is dual-ended, with a cream highlighter on one end, and a cream contour stick on the other. I use this to contour my nose, and have found it to be very blendable and natural looking. I think this is one of my best purchases of the month. I just LOVE IT!
  10. Becca x Jaclyn Hill Palette
    • This palette comes with 3 blushes (Rose Spritz, Amaretto, and Pamplemousse) and 2 highlighters (Champagne Pop and Prosecco Pop). The blushes are all very very pigmented. You only need to dip your brush in lightly in order to get a pop of color on your cheeks. My favorite in this set would have to be Amaretto, because it looks like a very natural flush. The two highlighters I usually mix together to give myself a fierce glow.
  11. Makeup For Ever Pro Sculpting Lip
    • I got mine in the shade 11, which is like a burnt rose shade. This product comes with a lipstick on one end, and a silvery powder lip highlighter on the other. I tried the highlighter once and it was a disaster. It ended up clumping on my bottom lip, and I looked as if someone had sprinkled white eyeshadow on there. Now, I only use the lipstick itself. It comes in a matte finish, and needs minimal touching up throughout the day. It is, however, quite drying, so you may want to put on a little lip balm beforehand to keep some moisture on those lips.

Destressing with Netflix

Netflix came to the Philippines in late 2015. Being a movie and TV junkie, I was immediately reeled in. They offered the first month for free, for which I signed up, and never looked back. The monthly subscription rate is pretty reasonable. I pay PhP 550 a month for the premium plan, which is roughly equivalent to $11 per month. It’s so cheap that my husband and I decided to just subscribe to Netflix instead of usual cable, which is more expensive, and something we don’t get to maximize anyway.

Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 9.32.03 AM.png

The Netflix content here in the Philippines is different from the U.S., in that the TV shows and movies we have at our disposal are very limited compared to what’s available over there. Nonetheless, it’s still a decent selection. They recently updated the database to include more TV shows and movies, and I couldn’t be happier. 🙂

I’m a homebody. I don’t go clubbing or partying. I’m not a big drinker. I hate staying out late. The only things I do to destress are shopping and staying at home watching TV. And we all know that shopping tends to break the bank, so most of the time, I just sit on my couch and turn Netflix on.

Here are a few of my current favorites:

  • 13 Reasons Why
  • Riverdale
  • Grace and Frankie
  • Designated Survivor

Of course I’m also still waiting for the new seasons of Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black to come back. Who isn’t? 😉

Are you a Netflix junkie, too? How’s the selection in your country? Is it as limited as what we have in the Philippines?
